Machine Learning and Architecture: S/M/L/XL
What happens when machine learning meets architecture?
This July, the Georg Nemetschek Institute | Artificial Intelligence for the Built World and the Chair of Architectural Informatics welcome Dr. Guy Austern (Technion, Israel Institute of Technology) to TUM as a guest scientist. Dr. Guy Austern is an Assistant Professor at the Technion’s Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning. His work at the Computational Design and Machine Learning (CD_ML) Lab applies machine-learning methods to architectural challenges at scales ranging from material experiments through building design to urban analysis. The research stay is coupled to a public program to which we warmly invite students, researchers, and PhD students. This event series takes place in collaboration with Coral Hamo-Goren and Dafna Fisher-Gewirtzman.
Keynote: “ML and Architecture: S/M/L/XL” by Dr. Guy Austen
A selection of recent CD_ML Lab projects, illustrating the major paradigm shift of the past few years: from traditional, vision-based approaches toward language-model-driven techniques.
13th of July, 17:00-18:00, @N0160 Schausammlung, TUM Main Campus
PhD Workshop: “ML-Driven Architectural Design: Models, Datasets, and Computational Workflows” by Dr. Guy Austern and Arch. Coral Hamo-Goren
The workshop introduces researchers and students to the field of machine learning and will cover theoretical foundations, historical development, and core ML concepts, including data analysis, supervised and unsupervised learning, vision models, Generative AI, and language models. The theoretical sessions will be accompanied by a series of hands-on Python exercises, equipping participants with the practical skills needed to integrate machine learning techniques into their own PhD research projects. Basic experience with Python programming is recommended.
14-15th of July, 09:30-17:00, @4170C Architecture Informatics Seminar Room, TUM Main Campus
Guest Lecture: “AI as a Game Changer in Human-Centered Architectural Design Research Methodologies” by Prof. Dafna Fisher-Gewirtzman (Technion, Architecture Visual Perception Lab)
Drawing on decades of work on how urban form shapes “perceived density”, Prof. Dafna Fisher-Gewirtzman shares some “hallucinations” about how AI could transform human-centered design research.
15th of July, 17:00-18:00, @4170C Architecture Informatics Seminar Room, TUM Main Campus
Boost-Hackathon
A hackathon focused on developing technical, data-driven projects at the intersection of machine learning, architecture, and urban analysis.
16th of July, 09:30-17:00 - @4170C Architecture Informatics Seminar Room, TUM Main Campus
To participate in the workshops, please sign up via email (info.ai@ed.tum.de).
For doctoral candidates at TUM, we can provide a certificate for participating in the workshop as part of the subject-specific qualification program (35h).
