Reading Absence: Cartography, Conservation and the Politics of "Blanks"
How do maps produce absences? What forms of violence, extraction, conservation, memory, and spatial erasure are hidden in what appears as "blank" space?
On 24 June, The Centre for Urbanisation and Peripheralization (CUSP) (Chair of Spatial Planning and Development) will host Simphiwe Mlambo for a brown-bag lunch talk on Reading Absence: Cartography, Conservation and the Politics of "Blanks."
The talk engages questions central to CUSP's work on urbanisation and peripheralization: how territories are represented, how landscapes are rendered available for extraction or conservation, and how spatial knowledge can both obscure and reveal histories of dispossession.
Through cartography, architecture, and critical spatial reading, Mlambo's work opens a conversation about how "blank" spaces are never empty — but marked by histories, ecologies, exclusions, and contested futures.
