Critical Curating
About Architectural Knowledge Production and Exhibitions
Master/ 3 ECTS

Curating is a research-based process that aims at the spatial presentation of complex topics. In contrast to publications, which convey scientific research in printed or digital form to the experts of a discipline, exhibitions are usually aimed at a broader audience and offer physical spaces of experience. In contrast to art and other exhibitions, architectural exhibitions represent a special task because they usually cannot show original objects (i.e. buildings) but only planning instruments or representations such as drawings, photographs or models. However, this also leads to new questions and solutions in the curatorial process. The space of the (architectural) exhibition can itself become an architectural task instead of just being a container of content. In the best case, architectural exhibitions contribute to the increase of architectural knowledge.
The “Critical Curating” seminar is intended to offer participants the chance to explore the basic elements of curatorial work using historical and contemporary examples. The aim is to develop an understanding of how both criteria and strategies are developed in the preparatory research process. A critical position here means, first and foremost, reflective handling of information, and the confident distinction between objective, fact-based arguments and subjective opinions. The aim of the seminar is to develop a basic understanding of the complex processes that determine a curatorial work and, through one's own reflections, to also develop positions or elements for a future exhibition on the topic of "Food & Space(s)".
