The use of digital tools and methods changes the planning and construction processes significantly. Also in the planning of industrially manufactured timber buildings, object-oriented, semantic building models are increasingly used; production is characterized by progressive digital manufacturing. At the same time, the processes are becoming more and more elaborate and complex, since information on construction systems as well as on manufacturing, transport logistics and assembly of the elements must be taken into account at an earlier planning stage.

The BIMwood project develops solutions for the value chain of planning and building with timber in the context of digital transformation. It is based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a key technology in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) with fundamental effects on common working methods. The research project focuses on the further development of methods, tools and actions in prefabricated timber construction to improve smooth planning and data management processes.

The interdisciplinary research project BIMwood is realized in close cooperation with the Chair of Design and Timber Construction (Prof. Kaufmann, since April 2021 successor Prof. Birk), the practice partners Prause Holzbauplanung, Lattke Architekten, AEC3 Germany and the timber construction company Gumpp & Maier.

Results of the project, which is funded by the "Nachwachsende Rohstoffe" funding programme of the Bundesministeriums für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL), are directed at decision makers, planners, timber construction companies and the software industry, which depends on the requirements of the specialist discipline of timber construction for new developments.
