KlimaKübelBäume 2.0

The research project KlimaKübelBäume 2.0 investigates trees grown in planters and builds on our successfully completed research project KlimaKübelBäume. The previous project left two key questions unanswered regarding the longevity of trees in planters and the suitability of different tree species for these conditions.

To address these questions, the new experiment includes 14 tree species, each represented by 14 individual trees, which will be studied over a period of 20 years. The large number of replicates makes it possible to remove individual trees at regular intervals and examine the development of their root systems. Important parameters, including soil temperature and moisture within the root zone, will also be continuously monitored.

In addition, various methods for measuring tree transpiration are planned. These measurements will provide precise, high-temporal-resolution data on the transpiration rates and, consequently, the water requirements of the different tree species.

The research project is supported by the tree nurseries Bruns, Lorberg and Ley, as well as the growing substrate manufacturer Interbims.
