AGRIFLOOR investigates the potential of industrial food cultivation within underutilized urban structures. The goal is to develop a vertical farming system and planning tool specifically tailored to the adaptive reuse of vacant office properties.
As a collaboration between the Technical University of Munich and industry partners, the project explores a technical solution that enables scaling vertical farming systems to integrate within the specific structures of existing real estate.
The combination of modular hardware and a digital planning tool allows investors to assess economic and spatial feasibility, while hydroponics, sensor technologies, and automated management systems enable efficient, data-driven cultivation processes.
Instead of relying on the industry-standard construction of new buildings, the project activates underutilized spatial potential efficiently, supporting sustainable building reuse while simultaneously addressing structural vacancy in major cities. This architectural approach also enables hybrid typologies in which food production and office operations can be spatially and technically combined.
By cultivating food directly at the point of consumption, transportation distances are further reduced, improving the overall carbon footprint, ensuring product freshness, and strengthening urban food sovereignty.
