
OfficeFarming explores the user-centred design, development and testing of systems that integrate the cultivation of edible plants into workplace environments, with the aim of developing these systems into a viable product solution. The project focuses on how indoor and vertical farming technologies can be integrated spatially and functionally into office architecture while enabling new forms of interaction between people, plants and food production. Rather than treating vegetation as purely decorative interior greenery, OfficeFarming considers it a productive part of the workplace: users can experience plant growth firsthand and harvest and consume food grown on-site.
As part of the project, a modular growing system for lettuces, herbs and microgreens was developed specifically for office environments. The vertical modules operate independently of the building structure, allowing food production to be incorporated into existing interiors while enhancing the functionality and design of different office space types. Depending on the spatial context, the modules can, for example, serve as planted partitions between work areas or as defining features in shared communication and break areas. Their integration into various office spaces was tested in practice during the project.
The system combines artificial lighting tailored to plant growth with sensors, data collection and intelligent controls, as well as demand-based irrigation and a closed-loop water system. Plants grow directly in the OfficeFarming modules, where they are cultivated throughout their growth cycle until harvest. Users can observe their development in their everyday working environment and consume the mature lettuces, herbs, and microgreens directly on site. Food production thus becomes a visible and tangible part of the daily workplace.
The concept combines local food production with resource-efficient cultivation, reducing the physical distance between production and consumption. At the same time, OfficeFarming creates a new interface between architecture, vegetation and food production, allowing users to directly experience the processes of plant growth and food production. In addition to perceptions of sustainability, the user studies conducted as part of the project highlight, in particular, the modules' aesthetic, social, interactive, and atmospheric qualities.
OfficeFarming, therefore, brings together research and product development. Drawing on user-centred studies, spatial, technical and design requirements were iteratively translated into prototypes, tested under real-world conditions and further developed into a modular system for use in office buildings. The research project also provides a foundation for further work on integrating productive vegetation and agricultural production systems into buildings.
