WHAT IS VERTICAL OPEN SPACE?
Brief description
What defines vertical open space? What characteristics distinguish it from conventional open spaces, and where can it be found? Isabel Zintl addresses these and other questions in her ongoing doctoral research.
A certain degree of technical language with clearly defined terminology is necessary to describe a subject matter. As part of a student project, Kristina Pujkilovic and Vera Wesinger explored the topic through the construction of objects. In a process-based approach across several phases, they developed descriptive terms – specific characteristics – for vertical open space. In particular, the two master’s students in landscape architecture analyzed MFO Park in Zurich, focusing on the spatial perception of vertical open spaces. A brochure documents both the working process and the methodology. From the choice of materials and the shaping process through to reflection, both artistic-creative and scientific-structured methods were applied. The aim was also to make the failures and dead ends encountered during the project, as well as the progressive consolidation of the specific characteristics of vertical open space, comprehensible.
Aim of the project
The aim of the project was to identify the characteristics of vertical open space (cf. Zintl 2018) through the construction of objects. To this end, the work began with Isabel Zintl’s specific characteristics of vertical open spaces (as of 21/22 February 2019) and further developed them through alternating phases of building and reflecting on what had been built.
