Interdisciplinary Seminar Campus Habitat

The interdisciplinary seminar Campus Habitat offers students of the TUM School of Life Sciences the opportunity to contribute, from the perspective of their respective disciplines, to the spatial development of the Weihenstephan campus. At its core is the question of how the campus can be further developed as a space for living, learning, and encounter in line with the guiding principle of One Health. Spatial interventions are understood as part of a long-term socio-ecological development process that brings together quality of stay, social interaction, experiences of nature, mental restoration, as well as ecological and microclimatic functions.
The starting point is the observation that the campus has a strong need for attractive places to spend time, social meeting points, and high-quality everyday amenities. While many individual ideas already exist, there is still a lack of a shared framework that could consolidate these approaches and embed them in a coherent spatial strategy. This seminar addresses precisely that gap: it serves to develop interdisciplinary project ideas that are further elaborated together with landscape architecture students and integrated into an overall vision for the campus.
In terms of content, the seminar connects spatial, ecological, social, and infrastructural questions. Possible topics range from the integration of research and experimental areas, to the linkage of campus spaces with the surrounding landscape and adjacent urban areas, to the further development of the campus’s ecological and atmospheric qualities with regard to biodiversity, ecosystem services, experiences of nature, and animal-aided design. The specific thematic priorities are developed collaboratively within the seminar.
The seminar understands interdisciplinarity not merely as an exchange of disciplinary perspectives, but as a process of joint concept development. Individual viewpoints and areas of expertise are brought together in group work and workshops and translated into spatial proposals. In this way, ideas emerge that are academically grounded, site-specific, and potentially implementable. The seminar therefore forms a key component of the long-term Campus Habitat project, within which promising interventions are to be pursued and further developed step by step.
