Visual Communication

The course is conceived as a seminar accompanying the design studios of GTLA/LAREG in the summer semester. It focuses on the development of drawings and visualizations as tools for thinking, testing, and communicating. In this context, visualization is understood not as a purely illustrative supplement, but as a means of developing spatial ideas, examining them, and communicating content with precision.
Based on an introductory lecture, different formats of graphic communication are explored: analytical and conceptual drawings, atmospheric perspectives, sectional perspectives, diagrammatic representations, and cross-scalar visualizations ranging from the object to the region. A particular emphasis is placed on the coherence between content and representation: which means are suitable for making a specific message visible? How can quantitative information—such as dimensions, masses, or relationships—be combined with qualitative and atmospheric statements? And when does a representation support the design process, and when does it rather obscure it?
Over the course of the semester, this approach is deepened in several intensive tutorial phases. Ideally, these are closely aligned with the interim reviews of the studios, so that the feedback gained there can be directly integrated into the further development of graphic communication. In group sessions, students analyze whether their analysis, idea, or concept has been communicated clearly, which representational tools they have used, and how these can be further refined. Working within the studio framework promotes direct feedback between design, discussion, and visualization.
The assessment consists of a final presentation in which students reflect on their individual process of visual communication. The focus is on the development of their own representational approach, the critical evaluation of the methods employed, and the concrete insights gained for the design process.
