Design Build - Cabin in the woods
Project BA - Architecture and Timber Construction
Winter term 26/27 (12 ECTS)
Taking the existing forestry hut above the town of Tegernsee as its point of departure, the studio focuses on the revitalisation of a modest existing structure within the sensitive forest and landscape setting. The course explores architectural strategies that are rooted in the site's available resources while investigating the potential of adaptive reuse. The materials recovered from the existing hut, together with storm-damaged and calamity timber sourced from the surrounding forest, serve as the primary basis for the design process.
At the beginning of the semester, students will analyse the existing structure, assess the available material resources and develop conceptual approaches for the sustainable transformation of the hut. As the course progresses, these initial concepts will evolve into detailed design proposals characterised by resource-efficient material use, innovative structural solutions and reversible construction methods.
The most outstanding projects will be honoured in a competition organised in collaboration with Versicherungskammer Bayern and the Town of Tegernsee. The winning proposal will subsequently be realised.
