Project Week: Technology-Supported Design Research

Technology Supported Design Research
6 ECTS | Project for Master Students from any discipline
In the project week “Technology-Supported Design Research”, students will learn to apply technology-supported research methods for understanding human behaviour in a design context. Working in the context of product, interior and service design, we will explore the interactions between the built environment and our minds, brains and bodies.
Students will learn how to use physiological sensors (including skin conductivity sensors, heart rate monitors and eye-tracking glasses) and state of the art AI models for human behaviour recognition.
In interdisciplinary teams, students will apply these new skills to investigate the user experience associated with a particular product, place or service. The goal is to derive insights about user behaviour that could inform the design process.
Prior knowledge about psychophysiological measurement or artificial intelligence is not required. The focus here is on the application of mature technology in totally new contexts. User-friendly software is provided to reduce the barrier to entry for the use of advanced technology. The course will be relevant both for anyone with an interest in human behaviour, technology or design.
*** IMPORTANT *** - If you want to participate in this project, please register and also send an e-mail with a short introduction of yourself and why you are interested in participating to teaching.ipd@ed.tum.de, using the subject “Technology Supported Design Research 2026/27”. Fixplatz will not be assigned without an accompanying email.
