Social and structural change presents rural areas with a wide range of challenges. For urban design and architecture, this requires a holistic understanding of spatial development that considers both local conditions and the wider regional context. Based on this approach, the thesis develops spatial strategies and practical recommendations for sustainable village development.

Using the market town of Teisendorf in the Berchtesgadener Land district as a case study, the thesis investigates how the potential of its historically evolved settlement structure and existing amenities can be further developed while addressing current deficits. The aim is to safeguard and sustainably strengthen the town's attractiveness as a place to live and work.

The thesis focuses on the inward development potential of the so-called “second row”, using these areas to address gaps in local services and housing provision. The adaptive reuse of the existing building stock is combined with carefully integrated new buildings that complement the existing urban fabric while bringing new life to the village centre.

The proposed strategies and spatial interventions for sustainable inward development can also be transferred to other municipalities, provided that local conditions and specific characteristics are taken into account.
