The Rhine Valley has been undergoing profound transformation for centuries, shaped by a variety of spatial processes. What was once a predominantly agricultural river valley is evolving into a dispersed mosaic of settlements, infrastructure, cultural landscapes, and river corridors. As a result, this highly fragmented landscape receives little public recognition, and its distinct landscape typology is difficult to define.

The development strategy for the Northern Chur Rhine Valley understands this transformation as a defining characteristic and an important element of the region's identity. The strategy is structured around two complementary fields of action. On the one hand, landscape deficiencies resulting from completed processes, such as the expansion of transport infrastructure and the regulation of the Rhine, are addressed through targeted interventions. On the other hand, the strategy focuses on the ongoing processes of material flows. By carefully adapting these processes, new landscape qualities are created while generating synergies with other demands placed on the landscape.
