Cities under Pressure! Munich’s population continues to grow. So do housing costs. Speculation on rising land values remains strong. Space within the city is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. Land reserves are dwindling, while affordable spaces are disappearing. Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, questions surrounding future forms of urban coexistence, building density, mixed-use development, and the coexistence of different urban functions had already become central topics of discussion.
The interdisciplinary design studio Power Bar brought together students of architecture and landscape architecture to explore the potential of large-scale urban structures. Can high-density building and open-space concepts provide answers to these pressing questions?
The project site was located in the north of Munich, in Schwabing-Freimann. Since 2013, the new Domagkpark neighbourhood has been under development on the site of the former Funkkaserne. The studio focused on a currently underused site of approximately nine hectares, where students were asked to design a Power Bar+: a hybrid, multifunctional building and landscape structure capable of conceptually integrating the heterogeneous surroundings while introducing entirely new spatial elements and programmes.
How can a contemporary, high-density, socially inclusive, and sustainable urban megastructure be conceived? How can open spaces be connected to the surrounding urban fabric? How can density and compactness contribute to preserving inner-city green spaces and reducing land consumption? And what design responses can create liveable environments for living, working, and everyday urban life?
