Non-finito / Melange Sendling
Design Studios, 2018/19
In the Munich district of Sendling, a wide variety of urban structures and programmes converge. Dense residential blocks with active ground-floor uses stand alongside the industrial halls of the wholesale market. At their interface, east of Gotzinger Platz, fragments of both coexist: incomplete perimeter blocks meet large parking areas and industrial buildings whose future use remains uncertain.
How can this heterogeneous area be transformed and further developed to create an integrated, open, and vibrant piece of the city while preserving its existing qualities? Which urban elements are essential for a place to be recognised as truly urban—a sense of familiarity—and which new approaches are needed in response to changing forms of housing and work, new relationships between public and private space, programme, architectural expression, and landscape connections to the surrounding neighbourhoods?
These questions were explored by students in the design studios “Non-finito Gotzinger Platz” (Summer Semester 2018) and “Melange Sendling” (Summer 2020), resulting in a series of urban design proposals. The studios were conducted in collaboration with the Chair of Landscape Architecture and Industrial Landscapes (LAI), Prof. Dr. Udo Weilacher.
