Table Talk on Natural Hazard Management in Onaville, Haiti

25.07.2017, 16:00h - 17:00h

Talk with Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Rieger, Chair of Hydrology and River Basin Management (Prof. Disse, TUM) and M.Sc. Johann-Christian Hannemann, Chair of Landscape Architecture and Public Space (Prof. Keller, TUM)

At the foot of the barren Mornes du Pensez-y-Bien near the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, a new city has been built since 2010: Canaan.
Planned as an emergency camp, by the land seizure of hundreds of thousands it has developed into the sixth-largest city of Haiti. Floods threaten thousands of people who live in natural danger zones without adequate protection infrastructures and often without adequate knowledge of the place.
Since 2012, students at TU München have been working on modeling, scenario building and small-scale planning with the minimization of hazards and improvement of living conditions. They organize neighborhood workshops and awareness raising campaigns in the neighborhood Onaville and develop context and risk-adapted protection and community infrastructures.
Wolfgang Rieger and Johann-Christian Hannemann discuss the potential and limitations of trans-disciplinary academic cooperation, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of process-oriented, participatory working methods in integrative urban landscape planning, far of European standards.
