Urban Interfaces

B.A. ARCHITECTURE INCOMING WINTER 2013/14
URBAN DESIGN STUDIO

The site with its predominant, listed buildings plays an ambiguous role in the texture of western Munich – it is calling for a specific approach to be developed.
Of what importance is the ubiquitous question of housing and density? How to treat the leisure value alongside the free, south-facing spaces along the tracks? What role will the old buildings play?

The task is to transform the site to form an adapted urbanistic concept.
This does neither simply mean a new masterplan, nor any tabula rasa concept, but the careful evaluation of the deficits and potentials of the area, taking into consideration the vicinity, the overall situation in the Munich context, specific opportunity brought in by location and the existing buildings and many more. Thus, an overall analysis must be the starting point, on-site as much as in terms of research.

Housing seems the logical core theme. The aim is to come up with the concept for a dense quarter with well designed dwellings and a clear allocation of public and semi-public spaces.
To establish and support an urban atmosphere of multifaceted and vital character that is attracting users from around, the choice of additional program and its precise allocation will be a key concern.
