Note: The seminar is part of the module of the same name in the Urban Studies course and the "Methodical Development of Research Questions" module in the Architecture course.

Objectives

The course serves as preparation for the master's thesis. With the successful completion of the course, students have a methodologically viable concept for their master's thesis. By following other students' preparations, they also have knowledge of the variety of methodological approaches and a reference framework for their chosen methods.

Description

In the course, students introduce their ideas and progress in preparation of their master's thesis to their peers, receive feedback from fellow students and lecturers, and write an exposé. In addition, basic knowledge on scientific methods is refreshed through inputs.

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the course, students should have one or several basic ideas for the topic of their master's thesis. The course should be attended at the latest in the semester before the completion of the master's thesis (i.e. in the 3rd semester), the master's thesis should be started only after passing the course.

Teaching and learning methods

The course will be held in several meetings, consisting of module introduction, methodological inputs and three presentations of the master's thesis concepts. In parallel, students prepare a written exposé which will be submitted after the last course. In the exposé, the students, in consultation with the supervisors, determine the content of the work, the methodology and the scope of the output.

The proposal should not exceed 10 pages (font size 12; Arial; 1.5-spacing; excl. figures). It should contain the following sections: introduction, question and hypothesis, (own) previous research, state of research, planned approach and methods, time schedule, literature list, appendix (if applicable).

If the number of participants is small, the meeting dates and delivery services can be arranged individually.

Examination

Hand-In of a concept paper for a thesis project according to the guidelines of the chair.
