Objectives
The objective of this seminar is to enable students to reflect on the entanglement of architecture with media practices and the changing demand(s) on architecture practices beyond the design of the built environment. The seminar also aims to raise awareness of architecture students as to the developments of the architectural profession in society and the role and profile of “the” architect as well as the positive and negative challenges associated with this development.
Description
This seminar deals with critical current issues in urban development and architecture. For each course, academic staff from the Chair of Urban Development select topics from their research.
In summer 2025 semster, Dr. Nadia Alaily-Mattar is offering the smeinar "Architecture as Media Practice".
One of the key competencies of architects pertains to imagining and communicating the shape, and potential impact of the built environment before its realization. However, architects use media not just to describe and explain their projects to clients, users, builders, craftsmen and so on, but also to construct them discursively. In the course of architects’ communicative work architecture is created and recreated in media. Particularly high-profile architecture practices mobilize representations of architecture (renderings, text, 3Dmodels, videos etcetera.) to steer and manage the expectations of how “their” architecture performs. Architecture’s entanglement in media practices is not new, however, new digital communication technologies are affecting the ways and scopes in which architecture is affected by media practices. How is contemporary architecture implicated in media practices? What risks and opportunities emerge out of such entanglement? What are the implications for architecture practice?
