Note: This course is available only for students of the MSc Urbanism, who intend to write a masters' thesis with Prof. Thierstein or Prof. Ottmann in the following semester.
Objectives
The course serves as preparation for the master's thesis. With the successful completion of the course, students have a methodologically viable concept for their master's thesis. By following other students' preparations, they also have knowledge of the variety of methodological approaches and a reference framework for their chosen methods.
Description
In the course, students introduce their ideas and progress in preparation of their master's thesis to their peers, receive feedback from fellow students and lecturers, and write an exposé. In addition, basic knowledge on scientific methods is refreshed through inputs:
- Identifying the state of research
- Literature management
- Citation guidelines
- Research questions and hypotheses
- Structuring a research paper
- Quantitative and qualitative research methods

Prerequisites
At the beginning of the course, students should have one or several basic ideas for the topic of their master's thesis. The course should be attended at the latest in the semester before the completion of the master's thesis (i.e. in the 3rd semester), the master's thesis should be started only after passing the course.
Teaching and learning methods
The course will be held in several face-to-face sessions, consisting of module introduction, methodological inputs and three presentations of the master's thesis concepts. In parallel, students prepare a written exposé which will be submitted after the last course. In the exposé, the students, in consultation with the supervisors, determine the content of the work, the methodology and the scope of the output.
If the number of participants is small, the meeting dates and delivery services can be arranged individually.
