Simple Slab - Design and Robotic Fabrication of Timber-Concrete-Composite Slabs

The design research studio “Simple Slab ― Design and Robotic Fabrication of Timber-Concrete-Composite Slabs” explores how computational design and novel robotic fabrication technologies can lead to low-impact building construction and reduce the use of raw materials. Based on the case study of the currently planned Einfach bauen" student homes Garching by the Chair of Architectural Design and Construction, Prpf. Florian Nagler, this semester’s task is to develop design and robotic fabrication methods for timber-concrete-composite floor slabs as a resource-efficient alternative to conventional reinforced concrete slabs, and also to explore their inherent process-distinct materiality and architectural expression.

 

The studio is divided into three phases: it starts with a scientific investigation, continues with the research project development, and ends with the transition of the theoretical knowledge into innovative practical applications.
