The mutual contingency of Venice and the Biennale is a tale as old as time. Inextricably linked for over a century, they have been entangled in spatial, cultural and economic terms. However, both parties have not always benefited equally from this relationship, with the city and its inhabitants succumbing more and more each year to the pressure and expansion of the internationally renowned event. And yet, how the organisation We are here Venice put it: “The question is not whether Venice should host the Biennale: it is a significant reality. But should Venice be getting more from the Biennale and vice versa.” This seminar will examine the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 curated by Carlo Ratti, and its “leveraging” of the floating city. By critically researching and mapping the historical and contemporary spatial and political entanglements of the Biennale and Venice, we aim to explore this notorious interdependence.
