Climate and Environment Friendly Urban Landscapes

Semester Project B.Sc. Landscape Architecture and Planning, Winter Semester 2022/23

Topic

Bolzano is considered a popular tourist destination and forms the bridge between northern and southern Europe. Nestled between mountains and vineyards, the city is shaped, among other things, by the confluence of the Eisack, Adige and Talferbach rivers. Despite this favorable location, it suffers from the effects of climate change due to its basin location, dominant traffic structures and dense development. Thus, Bolzano has already recorded 25 tropical nights this year (as of 08/17-22), nine nights more than the average. A recent study also points to a lack of green spaces. The need for climate-appropriate and livable urban landscapes becomes clear under these conditions. How can we make urban landscapes fit for the future by incorporating local conditions and what can we learn from Bolzano for the future design of our cities?

Task

First, different aspects of Bolzano will be analyzed, described and evaluated in working groups. During the excursion, an intensive examination of the site is planned, with a special focus on the design areas at Siegesplatz and in the residential district of Gries-Quirein with adjacent green spaces. Following the joint analysis, the landscape architecture specialization will develop a detailed design for a sustainable open space between Siegesplatz and Talferbach. On a larger scale, the landscape planning specialization is dedicated to the question of how Bolzano and in particular the Gries-Quirein neighborhood can be adapted to the consequences of climate change and biodiversity can be increased, taking into account the needs of all population groups.
