bolzano tropicale

Climate and environmentally friendly urban landscapes

Bachelor´s Thesis, B.Sc. Landscape Architecture and Planning, Winter Semester 2022/23

Topic

Bolzano is located between mountains and vineyards and is characterized, among other things, by the confluence of the Eisack, Adige and Talferbach rivers. Despite this favorable location, it suffers from the effects of climate change due to its basin location, dominant traffic structures and dense development. Thus, Bolzano has already recorded 25 tropical nights this year (as of 08/17-22), nine nights more than the average. A recent study also points to a lack of green spaces. The need for climate-appropriate and livable urban landscapes becomes clear under these conditions. How can we make urban landscapes fit for the future by incorporating local conditions and what can we learn from Bolzano for the future design of our cities?

Task

Based on the problems identified in the analysis, a viable concept and a detailed open space design for the design area are to be developed. The goal is a design that transforms the dissected square ensemble at Siegesplatz into a coherently usable urban open space. In particular, the adaptation of the urban space to the consequences of climate change and the change in urban mobility are to be clarified. In addition, a positioning of the design on the historical significance of the Victory Square in the context of Italian fascism is required.
