Architecture isn’t neutral—it determines who belongs and who doesn’t, reflecting and reinforcing systems of power and inequality. Universities, as spaces of knowledge production, often uphold these hierarchies, shaping how we are taught to think about and practice architecture. But there’s a shift happening. In recent years, students and researchers have been questioning these norms, exploring feminist, queer, and decolonial perspectives that challenge dominant narratives. Across the university, exciting projects have emerged that rethink spatial design and architectural education, yet they often remain invisible or disconnected. What if we could bring them together, make them visible, and showcase that architecture can convey multiple narratives?
In this seminar, we’ll explore and map these alternative spatial practices. We’ll start by creating a "Counter-Culture Map", gathering and categorizing projects from TUM’s Department of Architecture that push the boundaries of traditional architectural thinking. Along the way, we’ll ask: What stories do these projects tell? What connections can we make between them? And how can mapping itself be a feminist act of resistance, disrupting the dominant narrative of who and what gets represented in architecture?
Next, we’ll take our map and bring it to life. We’ll design an exhibition for the Women in Architecture Festival 2025, transforming our research into a spatial and visual experience. This will be our chance to experiment with feminist approaches to curating, design exhibition spaces that are inclusive, and create a platform for works that often gets overlooked in mainstream architecture.
If you’re interested in feminist spatial practices and want to take part in planning and building an exhibition, I look forward to hearing from you!
