Geraldus Martimbang (b. Jakarta, 1999) grew up in Yogyakarta and completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) between 2018 and 2024, specializing in Cultural Heritage, History, and Criticism. During his studies, he worked part-time as an architect and project manager at various international firms and participated in exchange programs at Sapienza University of Rome and École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris.
His research interest lies in the vast intersection between the built environment-related historical studies and other cultural, economical and historical studies. Since May 2025, he has been pursuing a PhD under the co-supervision of Prof. Andres Lepik and Prof. Nina Kleinöder (Chair of Social and Economic History, University of Bamberg). His dissertation explores the material-cultural and economic history of colonial private tea plantations in the Priangan Highlands between the 1840s and 1940s. The project expands on his Master’s thesis, which examined the colonial pavilion "Java Village" at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago—organized by the association of those tea plantations. He is scheduled to present a part of his research at the III International Congress on Colonial and Post-Colonial Landscapes in Lisbon, February 2026.
Beyond academia, Geraldus is actively involved in sociopolitical initiatives related to contemporary Indonesia. He has contributed to organizations such as the Indonesian Student Association in Germany, the ICONIC 2024 international conference at the University of Göttingen, and recently founded the Sagonese, a critical discourse platform for the Indonesian diaspora in Germany. He is currently seeking funding for his PhD research.
