Cultivating Architecture through Material Narratives
Cultivating Architecture through Material Narratives: Bioregional Prototyping with Agricultural By Products
This doctoral research explores regenerative design through the lens of material experimentation with agricultural by-products—specifically hops, sunflower, rice, and wheat. Aligned with the EU-funded BIOARC project, the dissertation investigates how these regionally abundant residues can be transformed into construction components—such as acoustic panels, insulation, partition walls, and wall boards—using microbial (MICP) binding strategies. Drawing from a bioregional methodology developed during the Material Perspectives project, the work engages with local material ecologies, craft knowledge, and prototyping practices to demonstrate how architecture can cultivate sustainable material cultures rooted in place.
