Rural Warmth: A Biomaterial-Based Lo-TEK Approach to Self Thermal Retrofitting in rural Germany
Rural building retrofitting faces pressing challenges in balancing thermal performance, material sustainability, and local engagement. This research project investigates bioregional strategies for self insulation retrofitting rural architecture in structurally weak areas of Germany by utilizing locally sourced agricultural byproducts, such as straw. By exploring low-tech, bio-based insulation systems, the project aims to develop scalable prototypes that meet thermal performance needs while remaining recyclable and locally adaptable. It further explores participatory construction processes as a means to strengthen spatial identity, enable circular material flows, and support collective-driven ecological transition.
