European Bioregions

COURSE STRUCTURE
The AND Foundation Seminar – European Bioregions develops new perspectives on the European landscape and architecture. Instead of perceiving Europe merely as a constellation of nation states, the course explores bioregional interconnections and makes them visible through cartographic and design-based approaches.
Starting from themes such as vernacular architecture, material cultures, plant cycles, seasonal rhythms, regional building practices, and production environments, the students engage in a re-mapping of Europe. Their work investigates how ecological, cultural, and material specificities can shape alternative narratives for living and building in a bioregional framework.
The seminar combines research and design in collaborative workshop formats. Students work collectively on mappings, drawings, and prototypes that connect spatial, ecological, and cultural dimensions. The results will contribute to a planned exhibition at the Swiss Architecture Museum (S AM) in Basel, embedding the student projects in the broader discourse on the future of bioregional construction and design.
By situating architectural practice within bioregional contexts, the seminar aims to challenge conventional territorial perspectives and to explore the potential of shared European ecologies.
