Die Blaue Nacht

An Artistic Intervention in Public Space For One Night

Semester Project B.Sc. Landscape Architecture and Planning, Winter Semester 2013/14

Topic

The Blue Night is an annual art event in Nuremberg in May since 2000. The event features numerous art stations (music, dance, theater, cabaret, guided tours, performances and installations), mostly associated with the color blue, in more than 70 museums and cultural institutions, on squares, in streets and courtyards of Nuremberg's Old Town. The core time of the event is from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. The event attracts an average of 130,000 visitors every year.

Task

The aim of the project is the conception and realization of an artistic intervention at Nuremberg's main market square for the Blue Night 2014. For the central art station of the event at the main market square, the city of Nuremberg will provide a project budget of 35,000€. The Blue Night 2014 will take place on May 3 and has the theme "Longing". The art action can be an ephemeral installation as well as an actionist intervention or a participatory performance. It should deal with the conditions of the place and its users. The ideas for the intervention will be identified within the project group and then a selected design will be brought to implementation maturity in the course of the semester.

The analysis phase is carried out in group work and concludes with a day and night excursion to Nuremberg. In the subsequent design phase, initial design concepts are developed, initially in individual work. In the further course, selected concepts will be worked on in design teams. After the selection of the intervention to be realized, a joint elaboration of the implementation planning takes place in working groups.

Realization

Finally the design "Waldplastik" was realized by the students in Nuremberg. Pictures and videos of studio 1zu1 can be found here.
