2020 Traveling images: Deep learning for exceptional architecture

Forschung | 07.04.2022

Image matters for cities. Architectural icons contribute to the image of cities. In a context of a growing mass circulation of photographs on the Internet, cities and urban players count on such circulation and viral effects for projecting a certain image of a city or an institution. However how can we describe the quality, quantity, speed and scope of the circulation of digital photographs of a certain building on a social media platform? And what does this circulation tell us about the performance of these buildings?

This is an ongoing teaching-based research project that in March 2020 started with with an Interdisciplinary Project (IDP) a teaching format at TUM in which Master of Informatics students engages with other disciplines. This self-financed research project builds on a previous DFG funded research project “Star architecture and its role in repositioning cities”.
