Final Review of the Master Project SHIFT at the Chair of Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design.
About the project:
SHIFT: Climate is shifting. So should we.
This semester's studio is about SHIFT: Learning from the global south, a research spin-off based on the global architecture movement with the same name. The studio started with the hypothesis that the vernacular architecture and lifestyle have already evolved to mitigate heat stress in already warm climates, and as the climate shifts from south to north, maybe we should shift the mindsets as well. The students focused on researching and dissecting examples from vernacular architecture from several cities that the future climate of Munich will resemble to, and found out the underlying design and physics principles for these case studies. We also travelled to the southern Spanish city of Sevilla, a city with several architectural, urban and behavioural elements that are already in use to allow its occupants to deal with high summer temperatures - to observe and document these strategies at different scales. At the final stage, our students focused on how these learnings can be translated into the Munich context, and to what extent they can be realistically applicable in near future design practices.
