Weaving Weeds

Weaving Weeds
As part of an ongoing exploration of sustainable architectural practices, the Bioregional Design Lab developed an innovative membrane roof for the dancefloor at the HORST Arts and Music Festival. The project, titled Weaving Weeds, covers over 600 square meters and was created in close collaboration with the festival team and local volunteers.
This lightweight roof structure is made from Japanese knotweed, an invasive plant species harvested directly from the festival grounds. By transforming a local environmental challenge into a design opportunity, the project demonstrates the potential of hyperlocal, biogenic materials in contemporary architecture.
Fabrication took place on-site in April, where volunteers from the "HORST Atelier" participated in the production of the thin, plant-based membrane. The membrane was then mounted onto an existing steel framework, forming a semi-permeable, tactile roofing above the dancefloor.
Through this work, Weaving Weeds addresses critical questions of material sustainability, ecological restoration, and circular design in the built environment.
