More Greenery for the Kulturkraftwerk in Sendling
Bachelor’s Thesis B.Sc. Landscape Architecture and Planning, Summer Semester 2025
Contents
In October 2021, an interim quarter was established in Sendling on the operational site of Stadtwerke München (SWM) to accommodate the cultural center Gasteig during its renovation. Within and around the former transformer hall at Hans-Preißinger-Straße 8, facilities such as the Isarphilharmonie (HP8), the Munich City Library (Hall E), a gastronomy venue (GAiA), as well as locations for the Volkshochschule and Musikhochschule were established.
The urban framework conditions surrounding the plaza “at the Kulturkraftwerk” have undergone fundamental changes, thereby altering the specific spatial requirements. The heterogeneous open space structure is evolving into a place of arrival and stay for visitors of the Philharmonie and City Library, as well as for students and local residents. In the future, the entire operational site is intended to be developed into a mixed-use quarter combining culture, commerce, and residential uses.
The objective is to design a concept that addresses the new programmatic requirements, responds to the challenges of the climate crisis and increasing resource scarcity, and clearly structures the open space within the urban context based on current and future spatial configurations.
Within the module “Research Designs in Landscape Architecture,” groups scientifically develop and document the foundations for the design process. In addition to classical open space analysis, the focus lies on quantifying green infrastructure through the use of the Biotope Area Factor. This module forms the basis for the subsequent bachelor’s thesis, in which an overarching concept as well as a detailed open space design are developed independently.
