Typologies of Public Space

Semester Project M.A. Landscape Architecture, Winter Semester 2017

Topic

Public open spaces - squares, neighborhood parks, gardens, but also street and river spaces provide public life with places that enable users to enjoy culture, communication, recreation, play and stimulation. Often, however, these spaces are also places of confrontation with other customs, other opinions - in short, of encounter with the different. This is the case on different scales and in different landscape contexts.

Task

Within a short period of time, it is necessary to familiarize oneself successively with three different project areas and their special features.
The prepared "invitations to tender" will be verified during the site visits and subsequently translated into a short design. The series of designs is accompanied by a theoretical examination of typologies of public space. Finally, the own written elaboration has to be classified against this background (integration "writing workshop"; inputs and discussions in German language).

Expeditions and excursions to the project areas
Stage CITY: Expedition into the urban environment of the former Olympic railway station in Munich
Stage LAND: Immersion in the rural surroundings of Bernried on Lake Starnberg
Stage RIVER: Picnic on the gravel banks of the Munich Isar (Isar Island Oberföhring)
