Kinderbedürfnisse im öffentlichen Raum - Ziele und Maßnahmen einer kindgerechten Stadtplanung in Deutschland mit Fokus auf die Stadt München
Master's Thesis Landscape Architecture
Topic
This paper deals with the needs and demands of children in public spaces and the resulting goals and measures of child-friendly urban planning. The starting point is the thesis that playgrounds, as the only safe places to spend time in the outdoor space of German cities, are not sufficient to offer children an adequate living space.
In the course of history, children's living space in the city has become increasingly smaller and is now reduced to a few 'islands of space' due to dense development, the dangerous traffic network of the automobile, restrictions on use and low acceptance on the part of the inhabitants. Therefore, in order to develop a sustainable city, a child-friendly urban planning, in which spaces, designs and elements are adapted to all city residents and interconnected, must become the goal. The thesis aims to answer to what extent public space responds to the needs of children, which basic conditions have to be fulfilled and with which measures current deficits can be eliminated. Using the findings of an interdisciplinary literature review to transfer current knowledge from social pedagogy to urban planning, as well as interviews with experts, the most common challenges, their historical causes, current legal bases, and the needs and behavior of children in public space will be identified. The analyses focus on Germany with a view to the city of Munich. With the help of a SWOT analysis, the results of the analysis are reviewed and a collection of strategies is created, which, together with a subdivision of the objectives, serves as the basis for a catalog of measures.
