Observation tower
Bachelor project architecture and timber construction, winter term 2023/24
On the edge of the Black Forest, 30 kilometres west of Stuttgart, lies the Kuppelzen in the tranquil Weil der Stadt. The town's local mountain is part of a hiking trail and a popular local recreation destination. A small hut is run by local associations and offers walkers a place to linger. In order to add a new attraction to the hiking trail, the idea arose to erect an observation tower on the Kuppelzen. The task is to design it.
A draft of the typology of the wooden tower offers the opportunity to look at timber construction-specific constructions in detail. The limits of what is statically feasible are explored, the principles of structural wood preservation are to be adhered to.
Accompanying the design, a seminar is offered in which the typology of the wooden tower is considered in a superordinate way. The knowledge gained from this will serve as a basis for your own design.
