munich urban mining

Masterprojekt Architektur und Holzbau, summer term 2023

Until modern times, the recycling of materials and the maintenance of buildings was one of the main tasks of designers and builders. New materials were rarely used in construction, as they were precious and difficult to obtain - recycling of the building stock that was no longer in use was common practice. In view of the scarcity of our resources, the reprocessing of building materials and the reuse of entire building components has experienced an urgently needed renaissance in recent years, and a comprehensive circular economy in the construction industry could become a reality.
Preceding the design process, the students will go on a material hunt for secondary raw materials and reusable building materials in the Munich area. The materials found are to be mapped, documented and then made available as a basis for planning within the framework of an urban design task. The development of new design strategies and building construction solutions is required, because as much material as possible from the urban mine is to be reused. A hybrid urban building block - made of wood and Reuse materials - is to be designed in the immediate vicinity of the Grossmarkthalle Munich. In terms of content, solutions are being sought for sufficiency, minimal and flexible usage concepts for living and dwelling.
The aim is to find answers to the question of the extent to which design with ReUse materials can create a "new" aesthetic of architecture.
