Shearing Shed
Bachelor project design and construction summer term 2026
The use of sheep to graze on urban green spaces has a long tradition in Munich. To this day, a flock of sheep is kept in munich´s Englischer Garten to prevent the extensive meadows from becoming overgrown with trees. Compared to mechanical mowing, sheep grazing proves to be an ecologically valuable alternative: it protects the soil, promotes biodiversity and blends harmoniously into the historic landscape park.
Within this context, the task is to design a Shearing Shed as a visitor and information centre in timber construction on the eastern bank of the Oberföhringer Isarwehr in the northern part of Englischer Garten.
The Shearing Shed serves as the reference typology – a functional agricultural building characterised by clear, purpose-driven architecture. Characteristic features include elongated building typologies with continuous roof structures, as well as a raised construction on point or strip foundations, which allows for a minimally invasive integration into the existing ground and thus naturally combines function, craftsmanship and landscape.
The spatial programme comprises a demonstration workshop for milk and wool processing as the functional focal point, a multi-purpose room for exhibitions and seminars with an adjoining viewing deck, overnight accommodation for the shepherds, and accessible sanitary facilities for the respective user groups. Particular attention is paid to a compact design. The distinction between heated and unheated areas is a key factor in the organisation of the individual building sections. In addition to meeting functional requirements, the design must also satisfy the highest aesthetic standards. The aim is to gently integrate the Shearing Shed into the unique setting of the English Garden.
