Der Platz ohne Namen
The Entrance to Lindenkeller
Semester Project B.Sc. Landscape Architecture and Planning, Winter Semester 2020/21
Topic
At the beginning of the 19th century, ice cellars were built in the western foothills of the Weihenstephaner Berg, then called Veitsberg, for the brewing process of Märzen beers. For almost 200 years now, there has been a summer bar on this mountain. The so-called Lindenkeller with its adjoining town café, ice house, upper house, lower house, hunting lodge and town garden is an important meeting place and cultural hotspot for the people of Freising. However, the area in front of the Lindenkeller currently offers little quality of stay and is dominated by traffic, parking and development.
This small town square does not even have its own name yet and is not an adequate calling card for this significant location. Against the background of the current developments in urban planning, the way future mobility can look like and the discussion about the use of public space, there is an opportunity to rethink and redesign the surroundings of the historic Lindenkeller.
Task
A high-quality design concept is to be found for the "Platz ohne Namen" (square without a name). The aim is to increase the perceptibility and quality of stay of the square and to strengthen the connection of the public space from "below" to "above".
How can a climate-friendly and climate-adapted redesign of the square be reconciled with the needs of traffic, gastronomy and the history of the place? What can be translated from the former infrastructure of the Ice Cellars into today and how can this be reflected in the design?
The existing structure, the topography, the tree population, as well as the new urban developments of the city of Freising are to be included in the design of the open spaces as a matter of course.
