Rückgewinnung der Schlosslände als urbanen Freiraum an der Donau

Master's Thesis M.A. Landscape Architecture, Lisa Hirschberger

Topic

In recent years, urban planning and landscape architecture was focusing increasingly on rivers. So, the city of Ingolstadt also aims to identify itself as a “city by the river“. Today, “Schlosslände“ is characterized by up to four lanes, is highly frequented and it separates the old town of Ingolstadt from the Danube as a result of traffic-oriented planning. Additionally, the barrier effect is reinforced by height differences and flood protection.

Therefore, the aim of the master‘s thesis is to develop a landscape architectural concept for the reclamation of “Schlosslände“ as an identity-creating and urban public space along the Danube.

The analysis of “Schlosslände“, its adjacent structures as well as the integration within the urban fabric is based on different scales. It highlights the urban context, aspects of flood protection and mobility. In addition, stakeholders are identified and specified by expert interviews. Finally, international reference projects provide insights into different approaches.

Projects, that have already been realized, show a wide range of ideas in order to reactivate rivers in urban contexts. Hence, the city of Ingolstadt has to decide on which future appearance is to be pursued for the inner city Danube. Accordingly, based on analysis results and theoretical background, two contrary design scenarios are developed: renaturation and urban edge. Both of them are based on closing “Schlosslände“ for motorized individual traffic in favor of reactivating the street as a public open space and to establish sustainable mobility. This is the only way to reveal the hidden qualities of “Schlosslände“ as a link between the old town and the Danube. The aim of both designs is to meet the different demands of open space quality, flood protection, accessibility as well as ecologic aspects.

The conclusion compares the scenarios and serves as a basis for further discussions for the definition of aims.
