IPD Project: The Emotion Hotel

The Emotion Hotel
15 ECTS | Project for Master Students
The Emotion Hotel is a speculative Master design project in which each student develops a hotel room dedicated to a specific emotion. Participants design spatial concepts that actively shape emotional experience through furniture, materials, color, light, sound, interaction, and narrative. Together, the individual rooms form a collective hotel system — an immersive exploration of how design can influence, regulate, and question the way we feel.
An integrated Seminar (mandatory attendance) provides scientific foundations in emotion theory as well as practical guidance in interior and product design, material exploration, and prototyping.
Students work individually and develop a scale model of their hotel room alongside comprehensive interior design concepts, including renderings and analog moodboards. In addition, they create a sensory concept that addresses sound, smell, atmosphere, and other hotel-related experiential features. In the final stage, all rooms are assembled into a coherent exhibition that presents the Emotion Hotel as a unified spatial experience.
