In 2006 the Associate Professorship of Architectural Design and Timber Construction began to offer the first Design Build Project - Khanyisani Preschool in the township Orangefarm 40 kilometers south of Johannesburg Center.

Since the yearly a Design Build project took place, the following two also in South Africa. In 2011 the projects went further north to Kenya followed by other subsaharian countries like Cameroon, Sambia and Tansania.
