Staging Heritage for Future. Advanced

An international Dialogue

Staging Heritage for Future. Advanced is a lecture series designed to complement the seminar Staging Heritage for Future Conservation-Restoration Theories of the 19th and 20th century. This intends to provide an in-depth knowledge on specific authors and theorists of the 20th century concentrating on the figure of Roberto Pane (Neapolitan School of Restoration) and Paolo Marconi (Roman School of Restoration), all the while pushing forward an International Dialogue between Germany and Italy widely open to further international collaboration.

A comparison between the two figures is mainly proposed here.

International guests coming from the University of Naples and Rome will illustrate the different aspects of the Philological approach to the preservation of monumental buildings proposed by Marconi and the Theory of Creativity introduced in the field by Roberto Pane, respectively.

The figure of Michael Petzet and his contribute into the international debate of monument care and preservation of monuments will also be presented and thoroughly debated with students.

Following successful completion of this module students will be able to acquire a better understanding of the ongoing international debate on preservation of heritage buildings and monument care through their protagonists.

Then,
- they will be able to analyse the historical aspects bond to the evolution of the recent debate.
- they will be able to clearly identify the connection between theory and practice – thus, the reflection of the philological method and the theory of the creativity into the practice of conserving and restoring buildings.

Particularly, students will be able to:
- recognize and clearly identify the different theoretical approaches and their peculiar aspects embracing the different fields that preservation cross disciplinary link. Then, students are expected to be able to remember the aspects bond to the presentation of cultural landscapes as well as the ones of architectural surfaces and elevation of buildings bond to the different theories.
Especially the implications of preservation theories into the practice are expected to be fully understood – thus, identified by students with respect to works of addition and the redevelopment of existing architectural features.
This critical assessment goes with a basic understanding of the interventions needed to preserve modern and historic architectural features while envisioning choices for novel solutions based on awareness and especially for the 21 century.

class lecture
The lecture series is delivered in specific meeting appointments.
A first introductory meeting will be led by teacher at TUM where the figure of Pane and Marconi are shortly introduced, along with their relevance at international level concentrating on the reading of original texts written by Roberto Pane and Paolo Marconi and considered representative of their thinking and theories in the preservation of heritage buildings.
The two following lectures will be delivered by international guests. Particularly, representatives of the School of thinking of Pane and Marconi established at the University of Naples and RomaTre will present in-depth studies on the figure of Pane and Marconi, respectively.

Further classes will be delivered concentrating on the figure of Michael Petzet, along with a closing event organised in a form of an open discussion between teachers and students on the preservation of heritage buildings in the XXI century.
