Vertical Open Spaces
Global social and climatic changes have posed enormous challenges for cities and their open spaces in recent years. The continuing wave of urbanization is pushing some cities not only to their spatial limits, but also to the limits of social resilience. In response to this population growth, urban space is being massively densified through strategic inner development. As sealed surfaces continue to increase and climate change advances, quality of life is declining in many cities. At the same time, cities are subject to constant change, and with it, the demands placed on open spaces are also continuously evolving.
Today, an increasingly diverse urban society no longer looks to open spaces solely for contemplation, relaxation, and a sense of safety. It also seeks stimulation, invitation, and a measured degree of uncertainty. Open space is therefore no longer understood only as a green counterworld to the city, but also as one facet of the urban realm. These developments pose social and climatic challenges for cities, and especially for their open spaces, but they can also be understood as a major opportunity to create new open-space typologies. Against this background, Isabel Zintl’s doctoral research project, “Vertical Open Spaces”, investigates, categorizes, and designs a new hybrid typology at the intersection of landscape architecture, architecture, and urban design. In the future, these spaces are intended to expand the repertoire of contemporary landscape architecture and offer a possible response to the social and climatic challenges of our time.
