Building Structures 1

The compulsory elective module "Building Structures 1" teaches the fundamentals of statics and strength of materials. The content of the course includes the mechanical quantities force and moment, equilibrium conditions, internal forces and deformations as well as the analysis of simple statically determinate systems using graphical statics and classical analytical design approaches. The course content includes the topics of equilibrium, trusses, bracing, beams, stability, materials and dimensioning. General prerequisites are basic knowledge of maths and physics, the ability to abstract and spatial imagination.

After successfully completing the module course, students will be able to understand the fundamentals and calculation methods of statics and strength of materials and use them to model simple structures in a mechanical model and to dimension components appropriately. The theoretical principles of statics and strength of materials are taught in lectures and applied and tested in central and homework exercises. Model tests and experiments illustrate the theoretical principles and consolidate the knowledge acquired.
