City Climate Canopies (C³)

The intensified climatic situation forms the starting point for the question of whether and how the urban climate can be improved and influenced with local architectural measures. Is it possible to counter the heat islands that are increasingly occurring in Northern and Central Europe with the means of retractable textile constructions in the form of architectural interventions in the city and, in addition, to generate added value for society? These questions lead to the idea of developing City Climate Canopies (C³), which generate urban-spatial, societal-social and climatic added values - on a small scale but with the greatest possible impact. Specifically, these are lightweight, climate-adaptive and flexible membrane canopies that counteract Urban Heat Islands (UHI) through their reflective effect, provide shade and preserve and create urban (meeting and utility) spaces with improved outdoor comfort.
