GREEN TYPOLOGIES
As Time Grows – Experimental Methods for Representing Time

How can time be made visible? This seminar examines how temporal processes can be made visible and tangible in landscape and architectural design. Taking urban wastelands in Munich as a starting point, it considers these spaces as dynamic environments where the traces of growth, transformation and appropriation intertwine.
The focus is on how time can be represented through creative, graphic and spatial forms of expression. Participants will experiment with various methods, ranging from graphic and photographic investigations to serial observations and film- and text-based approaches. The aim is to understand time as both a dimension and a medium for design and cognition.
Theoretical points of reference will be provided by the work of the French landscape architect Gilles Clément, particularly his Manifeste du Tiers Paysage (2004), as well as the dissertation Drawing Time (2018) by the Dutch researcher Noël van Dooren, which describes drawing as a method for investigating temporal processes in design.
The seminar combines field research, experimental presentation practice and theoretical reflection. The results will be compiled in a final presentation, creating a collective “archive of time”, which highlights different strategies of temporal perception and representation in urban landscapes.
Participants will be selected based on an introductory assignment to be completed before the start of the seminar, to ensure intensive engagement with the content. Further information will be provided after registration via TUMonline.
