Ongoing dissertation project: Julian Schäfer . Collage Landscape – Legibility and Development of Public Space in the Texture of Rural and Suburban Settlements and Cultural Landscapes 
Urbanist discourses on the modern city are centrally concerned with the question of the conditions and qualities of public space and its connection between material texture and social sphere. With regard to the countryside and the cultural landscape, there is a lack of a corresponding discussion of the relationship between the morphology, texture, and sociality of space. In the face of converging lifestyles, spatial textures that provide the basic capacities of public space even in suburban and rural cultural landscapes are examined. To do so, the exploration of public space and the texture of the city from the 1978 work Collage City is transposed in such a way that the argumentative structure and cartographic analyses can be applied to the suburban countryside as well. Like the urban spatial structures in Collage City, in Collage Landscape the basic physical-material structures of the open cultural landscape are understood as a coherent texture that makes public space possible. These structures are made legible based on Nolli's Nuova Pianta di Roma.
